Flower Paintings

I’ve always responded to the exuberance of flowers and to their extraordinary structures. The paintings in this series tend to be vivid, dramatic and colourful (For example: Lush and vetchy). I use concentrated watercolours and inks to build up rich layers of colours. I like to create strong contrasts, for example between bright white petals and dark foliage in ‘Daisies and lilies’. Sometimes the paintings become too over laden with colour and I lift off the pigment, in some cases scrubbing the thick watercolour paper or even bleaching it (For example: ‘Bunch of flowers’).
In the windblown series I was painting dried flowers, held up to the light to expose the fine layers of dried petals. I wanted to capture the intricate shapes and delicacy of the blooms (For example in ‘Windblown flower’).
